About the Programme

The ICADTS Grants Programme supports small-scale initiatives that contribute to reducing alcohol- and drug-related harm in traffic. The programme provides funding to ICADTS members, with a particular focus on applicants from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and Early Career Researchers (ECRs).

The programme aims to support impactful activities that align with the mission of ICADTS: to reduce mortality and morbidity caused by impaired driving and to promote the dissemination of knowledge across disciplines such as research, public health, policy, and enforcement.

Who can apply

Applications are open to:

• ICADTS members based in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs)
• ICADTS members who qualify as Early Career Researchers (ECRs)*
• Professionals affiliated with academic institutions, research organisations, or non-profit organisations

* Definition of Early Career Researcher (ECR): An ECR is defined as a researcher who is no more than 5 years post-conferral of their first postgraduate or doctoral degree (e.g. PhD, MD), taking into account documented career disruptions.

Priority will be given to:

• Applicants from LMICs
• Applicants who have not previously received ICADTS funding
• Projects with strong organisational affiliation and impact potential

What can be funded

The programme supports three main types of activities:

1. Research Grants: Support for research studies contributing to policy or scientific knowledge on alcohol, drugs, and traffic safety.
2. Educational Programme Funding: Support for educational activities aimed at raising awareness and promoting behaviour change related to impaired driving.
3. Knowledge-Sharing Initiatives: Support for workshops, seminars, and regional conferences that disseminate research findings and best practices.

Projects should:

• Align with ICADTS topics and priorities
• Demonstrate measurable outcomes (e.g. behaviour change, awareness increase)
• Use evidence-based approaches and effective dissemination methods

Funding levels

Funding is intended for direct project costs only.

• Research grants: €500 – €5,000
• Educational/knowledge-sharing initiatives: up to €2,000

Key conditions:

• Maximum 50% of total direct project costs may be covered
• Salaries and indirect costs (overhead, administration) are not eligible
• Funding is limited to out-of-pocket expenses

Payment model:

• 50% at project start
• 50% after completion and fulfilment of reporting requirements

How to apply

Applicants must submit:

• A detailed project proposal (max. 10 pages)
• A clear description of objectives, activities, and expected outcomes
• A detailed project budget
• A CV (max. 2 pages, covering the last 5 years)

Applications should demonstrate:

• Relevance to ICADTS mission
• Feasibility and clear planning
• Potential for measurable impact

Selection and evaluation

Applications are assessed by the ICADTS Grant Committee and approved by the ICADTS Executive Committee.

Evaluation criteria include:

• Alignment with ICADTS mission
• Clarity of objectives
• Feasibility and methodology
• Engagement of target audiences
• Use of evidence-based approaches
• Stakeholder involvement
• Potential impact and sustainability

Applicants will receive a decision within approximately 60 days after the application deadline.
